Motor Industry Worker (Lady) Died of Mesotheolioma

Derbyshire.co.uk reports factory worker died of mesothelioma after exposure to asbestos in car parts, on February 10th. Working on starter motors and alternators years ago, Gloria Lawrence, of Linton, Swadlincote, Derbyshire, contracted the deadly disease. She was employed to remove scrap parts and clean them for soldering.

Following the development of the disease, Gloria fought with Derbyshire health chiefs, for a drug that could help prolong the lifespan. But the treatment which cost 8,000 pounds a year was of no benefit.

The inquest at Derby Coroner’s Court drafted how fifty-five year old Mrs Lawrence was exposed to asbestos when working for Lucas Aftermarket Operations, which is now known as TRW Ltd. The company was formerly in Brimingham.

An expert consultant, Colin Plum says: “There can be no doubt that some of the starter motors and alternators upon which the claimant worked incorporated asbestos-containing materials. Starter motors contained resin-bonded chrysotile (white asbestos). It is a matter for medical opinion whether white asbestos would cause mesothelioma.”

This also proves without doubt that the people working in motor industries are highly prone to the deadly disease.
